Visit by well-known professor from the University of Melbourne, Australia
Professor Jean Mulder of the University of Melbourne’s Department of Languages and Linguistics was in Nagoya doing research this month. Through our connection with her as a member of the World Englishes academic community, she came and gave a lecture at the Kokusai Eigo Career ‘common room’ to a small group of professors and students. She discussed the use of the articles “a” and “the” by highly educated Indonesian users of English in the United Nations, and found some common points between the challenges that both Japanese users of English and Indonesians have with this tricky feature of grammar. It was followed by a lively question and answer period. Thank you Dr. Mulder!
