What is GLS?
Chukyo University offers the Global Liberal Studies (GLS), an interdisciplinary program that helps students acquire the broad skills and knowledge of the social sciences and humanities needed to become independent thinkers, lifelong learners, and responsible global citizens in a rapidly changing world. The major is fully English-medium instruction (EMI), in which all classes are content-based and taught by professors from various academic fields within the humanities and social sciences. Thus students must already have English as their first or second language as a foundation for successful study in the program.
What is Chukyo?
Chukyo University is private university with approximately 13,000 students that hail from all over Japan and around the world. Chukyo University’s Nagoya campus is located in the Aichi prefecture of central Honshu. Whether your interests are sightseeing, shopping, or taking in the charm of Japan’s fourth largest city, there is something for everyone here and studying at Chukyo gives you the chance to find it.

Timeline
Pre-Enrollment
If you are arriving at Chubu Centrair International Airport (the closest international airport to Chukyo), you can sign up for the Airport Pick-Up Service if you arrive within the designated pickup period. Details of dates, times, and pick-up locations will be available in your Enrollment Procedure Guideline that you'll receive from Chukyo on enrollment.
First 6 Weeks
Meet and get to know your academic advisors, prof. James D’Angelo and prof. John Esposito, along with your classmates at GLS. Moreover, members of the School of Global Studies’ Fellowship of World Cultures (FWC) stand ready to assist you provide mentorship for international students with questions about daily life in Japan and student life here in Chukyo.
1st Year
Over the first year you’ll be taking numerous GLS Core Classes as well as paired with the Japanese classes that suit your needs. Core classes for the first year include: Introductory Seminar, Ancient Civilizations, Critical Thought and Expression, and Intellectual Tradition.
2nd Year
By your second year you’ll be able to branch out into more electives from the School of Global Studies. School of Global Studies offers electives taught in English, so that you can take courses with students from other majors (International Human Studies, International Politics, International Economics, Plurilingual & Pluricultural Studies, and British and American Studies).
3rd Year
So you’ve make it this far, time to think about your thesis, and which seminar best fits your future ambitions.

4th Year
Almost there, time to think about what you’ll do after graduation. Time to finish that thesis. You work with one academic advisor on a capstone project which allows you to integrate what you have learned of a particular culture or discipline into a broader global framework. The final project may take the form of a traditional thesis, or an alternative project format, mutually agreed upon with your advisor.
Curriculum
Students can choose from a wide range of classes offered in English from the different programs within the School of Global Studies in order to develop a holistic knowledge of the world's cultures, philosophies, politics, societies, and religions through different historical periods.
Student Life
The student council and other student groups arrange a variety of activities throughout the year. Meeting students during these and your day-to-day classes opens a variety of opportunities to interact both on and off campus. Feel free to fit in wherever you like.
