- The “Liberal Arts” focus will help you gain a strong sense of important developments in the history of mankind, to help solve modern day problems.
- By studying various areas in the humanities, you will gain a strong ability to analyze problems and synthesize solutions.
- In your graduation thesis, you will focus deeply in a particular area of interest, working one on one with your professor. This will assist greatly in your future life and career.

Course Description
The Global Liberal Studies (GLS) major is an important part of the School of Global Studies (‘SGS’/国際学部). It is based on the term ‘liberal arts’. This involves an approach to higher education that is centered on the humanities, and gives students a strong sense of the history, development, and achievements of mankind. Rather than studying in one particular area or 分野 students experience a range of academic fields, gaining a strong ability to analyze social problems and think for themselves. We seek to have a good balance of Japanese students and international students. This promotes great opportunities for cultural exchange using English as the main form of communication, to make lifelong friendships. You will take core and elective classes in our GLS major, as well as a range of electives in SGS’ other five majors. You can choose to concentrate your electives in the area which interests you the most: humanities, international relations, business, linguistic and cultural studies, or British and American studies. You may also take classes taught in Japanese. We find our graduates either wish to work for an NGO, in a business firm, or go on to graduate school to earn a masters’ degree. We are confident you will enjoy being part of GLS, and it will prepare you to make a strong contribution in your future career.

Course Overview
☆Global Economy（James D’Angelo）
This is an interesting class where Professor D’Angelo co-teaches with Professor Fukuda of the Global Economics major. The class provides a solid foundation in economic principles and theory, and then each theory is tied in to a practical application from real-world news events happening around the world which influence our daily lives. Students can better see how business and economics is part of a liberal education.
☆Ancient Civilizations（John Esposito）
This course introduces the artistic, literary, and technological achievements of classical civilizations with an eye toward their relevance in the world today. Students learn how to describe the primary characteristics and patterns of specific cultural traditions as well as evaluate and compare cultural forms of expression. The primary goal is to identify themes that cut across geographic and temporal boundaries while relating ancient customs, beliefs, and values to contemporary life.
