The Department of British and American Cultural Studies
This department's purpose is to study and research the language, culture and social circumstances of English-spoken countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. This is done based on the Anglo-American ideal of "freedom and autonomy." Students are expected to acquire a level of cultural sensitivity and English language ability that will empower them with the freedom to disseminate information in English in specialized fields. The first and second years feature language-learning classes including Oral Communications, taught by native English instructors (5 hours/week).
The specialty selective courses on culture, literature and linguistics offer over 20 subjects including film, drama, modern culture, comics, media, British and American literature, linguistics, cross-cultural understanding, and the social history of the UK and the US.
For overseas language training, we provide an elective course called Overseas Seminar (hosted by the International Center) on the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand. Students who pass selective examinations are also entitled to join the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) and study at overseas sister schools under the credit transfer system.
The office-hour and tutoring programs - with foreign and full time instructors, respectively are designed to ensure fine-tuned support for students.
