That a foreigner should be the Chair of a Japanese Faculty of Management will no doubt be surprising to many people. The fact that the foreigner in question has no academic background in any area traditionally associated with management studies may be even more surprising. Yet both apparent anomalies can, I think, be explained. Many aspects of Japanese management have been admired, studied, and emulated by the rest of the world for many decades, just as Japanese management has incorporated influences from a variety of external sources such as W. Edwards Deming and Peter Drucker. The result is that while differences among countries certainly exist, there is no longer any such thing as a ‘national’ management style; the exigencies of globalisation have led to an inextricably tangled web of approaches and philosophies that defies simple categorisation. My experiences as a foreign resident in Japan, and as an inveterate traveller, may have helped to give me a wide range of perspectives from which to attempt to understand the complex phenomena of contemporary global management. There is no doubt that today’s world demands a sophisticated understanding of the technical aspects of management such as production systems management or statistical analysis. At the same time, however, there is a vital need for a comprehensive awareness of the human dimension of all management issues. Management, after all, is ultimately about people and their relationships - with each other, with companies, and with society. My early academic background in the humanities gives me, I believe, valuable insights into the human aspects of management, and my doctoral research in intercultural communication has enabled me to apply these insights across cultural boundaries. For the above reasons, although I do not fit the traditional pattern I hope to be a competent and effective Chair of the Faculty of Management. I am honoured by this opportunity and I shall try my best to be worthy.

外国人が学部長、ということに驚かれる方もいるかもしれません。しかも私は伝統的な経営学とは異なる分野の研究者なのですからなおさらです。しかしこれらのことは同時に、本学部からのメッセージでもあります。

日本における企業経営は、これまで長年に渡って世界中で称賛され、研究や学習の対象となってきました。一方でその日本的経営は、エドワーズ・デミングやピーター・ドラッカーを始め、外国からの影響を受けて発展してきたという経緯もあります。つまり、現在のようなグローバル化の時代においては、“その国固有の”経営手法というのは存在しないのです。グローバル化とは、様々なものの見方や考え方が密接に絡み合いながら複雑な状況になっていくことを表します。日本国内外の様々な場所で暮らしてきた私自身の経験も踏まえ、そのような時代における経営を理解するためには、幅広い視点を持つことが大切だと私は考えています。

現代の経営を考える上で、生産システムや統計分析といった技術的側面についての高度な知識が重要であることは間違いありませんが、同時に、経営に関する人間的な側面についての理解も必要です。つまり経営とは、人と人、人と企業、人と社会といった“つながり”なのです。当初の私の専攻は人文科学であり、そのことが、経営におけるヒトの重要性に気づかせてくれたのだと考えています。また博士課程では異文化コミュニケーションについて研究し、そのような考え方が文化の壁を越えて共有できることを学びました。

このように私は、伝統的な経営学部長のイメージとは異なるかもしれませんが、与えられた役割を誇りに思いながら、本学部のさらなる発展に少しでも役立てるよう頑張りたいと思います。
