≪Profile≫

Born in Boston, Massachusetts on a beautiful autumn day, I lived within a couple of minutes walk from the Atlantic Ocean until the age of three, whereupon, I moved to South Miami, Florida. I attended public schools, including Miami-Dade Junior College. I worked at various jobs in the Miami area, mostly in the tourism industry before returning to Massachusetts to work on social issues such as sexism, racism and militarism both personally and politically. I resumed my formal education at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. I dropped out of school to support a Japanese Buddhist Order, working for world peace and disarmament. During that time, I met many Japanese and other people from around the world. I later met many Japanese families during a peace walk from Nagasaki to Hiroshima and decided during that three month visit to live and work in Japan. Upon returning to the United States, I completed the foreign language requirements by studying Japanese, thus earning an undergraduate degree. I had already begun work on a Masters of Arts in Education degree; Cultural Diversity and Curriculum Studies with a concentration in ESL/EFL. After earning my degree, I came to work at Chukyo University in April 1996. I have been working as the de-facto head coordinator for a number of years. Outside of work, I enjoy tennis, cycling and water sports such as sailing and swimming.

≪Classes≫

In the 2002 academic year, I will be teaching two classes of Oral Communication for third year students, a Senior Seminar and Senior Thesis writing class, a Reading class for third year students and a Communicative Writing class for third year students. I also have a Free Discussion class at the Open College.

≪Research Area≫

A recent interest is in the field of Extensive Reading as a significant tool to enhance English acquisition. My main field of interest and research has been and continues to be trying to find ways to build a more effective English Language Studies Program here at Chukyo University. It involves a great deal of communication with the many part time teachers, liaison work between the program department chairs and instructors, and implementation of new ideas. Finding ways to create a workplace for teachers that is both professionally fulfilling while offering a sense of security promises to lead to more satisfied learners and a more employable student body. Input is always welcome!
