Gary French has been teaching in Nagoya, Japan since 1995, and has been an associate professor at Chukyo University since April, 2001. Before coming to Chukyo University, he was a foreign lecturer at Aichi Gakuin University in Japan. He has also worked as a professor of English at the Technological Institute of Monterrey in Guadalajara, Mexico and as an instructor of English in the United States. Mr. French was born in Chicago, Illinois and later moved to Ohio, where he completed his university studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in English, and a Master of Arts in English with a Specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio.
In the 2002 school year, Mr. French will be teaching Oral Communication I and Communicative Writing I for freshmen, Reading III for juniors, a senior seminar on cross-cultural communication, and a senior thesis class.
Mr. French is very interested in the teaching of writing. In 2002, he will assume the title of "Writing Program Director," and will oversee the writing program. One new feature of the writing program will be a system of portfolio assessment for the freshman and sophomore writing students. Mr. French is also interested in conducting research into the areas of learning strategies and preferences of Japanese students of English, and of finding ways to help English learners improve their performance in English. Currently, Mr. French is helping to organize a new study abroad program at his alma mater for Chukyo University Students that will begin in the summer of 2003.
